Riot Grrrl Zine
2 A5 Hand-bound Zines with 4 different types of paper signifying the intimate stories about recovery from close friends as a part of a Riot Grrrl project.
In the wake of #MeToo, #TimesUp, and the Silence Breakers, it may feel as though our media has become over-saturated with news about sexual assault, harassment, and debates around consent. But what I don’t see is the talk about the aftermath, about how women, and men too, have coped with their trauma, who they lean on for support, and the inspiring stories about recovery. When it’s that high-profile, it seems to be about the perpetrator, about his response and not about how victims can and are recovering.
That is what this zine is about, it is about how though we may still be hurting and though that pain may never fully leave us, we are stronger than our past.
If you are a victim of sexual assault, I hope these stories inspire you to take control of your recovery. There are so many of us out there who want to support you and know that you are not defined by this.
Sexual Assault hot-line:
These stories are an unbelievably small sample size of the spectrum of assault and abuse that happens to women in college. And none of them provide a solution to this scary problem because there is no easy answer. Controversies around consent, hook-up culture, and intoxicated sex are nuanced and complex issues that, I believe, would take large cultural shifts to change. But my hope is that each victim is able to feel supported and take steps towards recovery, and that once doing so they feel more empowered to join the conversation and help enact change.
